Rhiptoglossi was named by Wiegmann (1834). It is extant.

It was corrected as Rhiptoglossa by Cope (1871) and Cope (1875); it was reranked as the superfamily Rhiptoglossa by Kuhn (1946).

It was assigned to Lacertilia by Cope (1871) and Cope (1875); to Squamata by Hay (1902); and to Lacertilia by Kuhn (1946).
