Proteroglypha was named by Duméril. It is extant.

It was reranked as the subfamily Proteroglypha by Perrier (1928); it was reranked as the unranked clade Proteroglypha by Gadow (1898) and Kuhn (1946).

It was assigned to Ophidia by Cope (1871) and Cope (1875); and to Colubridae by Gadow (1898), Perrier (1928) and Kuhn (1946).

E. Perrier 1928Dents antérieures du maxillaire profondément sillonnées, le sillon se fermant quelquefois presque en canal; ces dents en rapport avec une glande venimeuse. En arrière de ces crochets venimeux, une série de dents semblables, mais pleines. Serpents extrêmement venimeux, à venin plus actif que celui des Vipéridés, et se présentant, en général, -en raison de leurs grands crochets et de l'abondance de leur salive venimeuse, comme particulièrement dangereux. Le plus souvent vivipares. Régions tropicale et australe des deux mondes, et Australie; manquent à Madagascar et en Nouvelle- Zélande.
