K. A. Monsch and A. F. Bannikov 2011Body deep and fusiform. Small teeth. Fron- toparietal fenestra and pineal window present. First vertebra completely sutured to skull. Preural vertebrae 2–3 strongly shortened. Recent species with 39 vertebrae. Fossil species possibly of Thunnus have less or more vertebrae (see below). First dorsal fin with 11–14 spines, second dorsal fin with 12–16 rays. 7–10 finlets both above and below. Pectoral fin with 30–36 rays.
