Taxonomy
Rarecostites tenuicostatus was named by Besnosov (1993). Its type specimen is VNIGRI 115/1851 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Kuli, Dagestan (upper Kumukh Fm), which is in a Subfurcatum marine horizon in the Kumukh Formation of the Russian Federation.

It was recombined as Caumontisphinctes tenuicostatus by Mitta (2017).
