Tetratormentum was named by Nazarov and Ormiston (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-u P Asse-l Sepkoski's reference number: 535]. Its type is Tetratormentum narthecium. It is the type genus of Tetratormentidae.
It was assigned to Latentifistulidae by De Wever et al. (2001); to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tetratormentidae by Noble et al. (2017).
