Taxonomy
Tetraodon was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Tetraodontidae.

It was assigned to Tetradontiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tetraodontidae by Zigno (1887), Schultz (1978) and Matsuura (2015).
