Allopleuron was named by Baur (1888) [Sepkoski's age data: K u].

It was synonymized subjectively with Chelone by Lydekker (1889).

It was assigned to Cheloniidae by Carroll (1988) and Hirayama (1995); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Allopleuroninae by Weems (1988), Karl (2007) and Karl et al. (2012).
