Archelon was named by Wieland (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 987]. Its type is Archelon ischyros.

It was assigned to Dermochelidae by Wieland (1896); to Protosteginae by Weems (1988); to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protostegidae by Wieland (1900), Hay (1902), Wieland (1909), Hay (1930), Zangerl (1953), Carroll (1988), Hirayama (1995) and Cadena and Parham (2015).
