Cynocercus was named by Cope (1872) [Sepkoski's age data: K u]. Its type is Cynocercus incisus.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Osborn (1930).

It was assigned to Sphargididae by Leidy (1873); to Toxochelyidae by Hay (1902), Hay (1905), Hay (1908), Hay (1930) and Zangerl (1953); and to Chelonia by Sepkoski (2002).
