Taxonomy
Trachyceras steinmanni was named by von Mojsisovics (1882). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Val del Monte, Esino, Perledo, which is in a Ladinian carbonate limestone in the Esino Formation of Italy.

It was recombined as Trachyceras (Protrachyceras) steinmanni by Arthaber (1915); it was recombined as Protrachyceras steinmanni by Brack and Rieber (1993) and Fantini Sestini (1994).
