Acrochordus was named by Hornstedt (1787) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 505]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Caenophidia by Gravlund (2001); to Squamata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acrochordidae by Carroll (1988), Frank and Ramus (1996) and Uetz (2005).
