Caririemys, in allusion to the town of Santana do Cariri, where most of the fossils from the Romualdo Member come from and emys, from the Greek language turtle

Caririemys was named by Oliveira and Kellner (2007). Its type is Caririemys violetae.

It was assigned to Pelomedusoides by Oliveira and Kellner (2007).
