Named in honour of the palaeontologist Jonas Pereira de Souza Filho

Taxonomy
Stupendemys souzai was named by Bocquetin and Melo (2006). Its type specimen is UFAC 1764, a limb element (right humerus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Patos, Rio Acre, which is in a Miocene alluvial fan conglomerate/sandstone in the Solimoes Formation of Brazil.
