Nigerophis was named by Rage (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani T Eo-m-l Sepkoski's reference number: 505]. Its type is Nigerophis mirus. It is the type genus of Nigeropheidae.

It was assigned to Serpentes by Rage (1975); to Nigeropheidae by Rage (1984); and to Squamata by Sepkoski (2002).
