Selmasaurus was named by Wright and Shannon (1988) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 1069].

It was assigned to Squamata by Sepkoski (2002); to Plioplatecarinae by Polcyn and Everhart (2008); to Plioplatecarpinae by Wright and Shannon (1988) and Driscoll et al. (2019); and to Selmasaurini by Longrich et al. (2024).
