Taxonomy
Nectosaurus was named by Merriam (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Carn Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Nectosaurus halius.

It was assigned to Thalattosauria by Merriam (1906) and Sepkoski (2002); to Thalattosauridae by Merriam (1905), Hay (1930) and Müller (2007); and to Thalattosauroidea by Nicholls (1999) and Wu et al. (2009).

E. L. Nicholls 1999All teeth conical and pointed, enamel heavily striated. All teeth set in deep sockets. Teeth have very long roots which do not ankylose to surrounding socket. Bone of attachment may be present at the base of the crown. Six to 8 teeth on maxilla, anterior maxillaiy teeth sharp and needle-like, posterior maxillaiy teeth slightly blunter. Five bluntly pointed teeth on anterior tip of vomer, rest of vomer edentulous. Mandibular teeth sharply pointed. Ventral edge of maxilla extends posteriorly well beyond anterior edge of orbit. Coronoid process very high, narrow and sharply pointed. Posterior extension of coronoid bone poorly developed.
