Anarosaurus was named by Dames (1890) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis Sepkoski's reference number: 746,1044].
It was assigned to Pachypleurosaurinae by Nopsca (1928); to Simosaurinae by Young (1965); to Pachypleuridae by Carroll (1988); to Pachypleurosauria by Storrs (1991); to Pachypleurosauroidea by Rieppel and Lin (1995); to Pachypleurosauridae by Kuhn (1966), Kuhn (1971) and Rieppel (2000); and to Notosauria by Sepkoski (2002).
