It was assigned to Nothosauria by Gürich (1884); to Pachypleurosaurinae by Nopsca (1928); to Pachypleuridae by Carroll (1988); to Pachypleurosauria by Storrs (1991); to Pachypleurosauridae by Kuhn (1971), Rieppel and Lin (1995) and Rieppel (2000); and to Notosauria by Sepkoski (2002).
