Hupehsuchus was named by Young and Dong (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Hupehsuchus nanchangensis.
It was assigned to Nanchangosauridae by Carroll and Dong (1991); to Notosauria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hupehsuchidae by Chen et al. (2014).
