Taxonomy
Psilotrachelosaurus was named by Nopsca (1928) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-l Tr Carn-l Sepkoski's age data: Tr m Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. Its type is Psilotrachelosaurus toeplitschi.

It was corrected as Neusticosaurus by Nopsca (1928).

It was assigned to Lariosauridae by Lydekker (1889); to Neusticosauridae by Seeley (1892); to Pachypleuridae by Carroll (1988); to Pachycephalosauridae by Rieppel and Lin (1995); to Pachypleurosauridae by Nopsca (1928), Kuhn (1971), Sander (1989), Rieppel (1993), Rieppel (1995) and Rieppel (2000); and to Notosauria by Sepkoski (2002).

rosaur sharing with the Serpianosaurus-Neusti- cosaurus clade the surface ornamentation on the
humerus but differing by the relatively short hu- merus, a more fully ossified carpus and tarsus (distal carpal/tarsal 4 present), and relatively broad ventral elements in the pelvic girdle.
