Bishanopliosaurus was named by Dong (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: J Toar Sepkoski's reference number: 746,1269]. Its type is Bishanopliosaurus youngi.

It was assigned to Rhomaleosauridae by Dong (1980); to Pliosauridae by Carroll (1988); and to Plesiosauria by Sepkoski (2002).
