Eurycleidus was named by Andrews (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was assigned to Leptocleididae by White (1940); to Plesiosauridae by Delair (1960); to Pliosauridae by Carroll (1988) and Cruickshank (1994); to Pliosauroidea by O'Keefe (2001); to Plesiosauria by Andrews (1922) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Rhomaleosauridae by Ketchum and Benson (2011) and Benson et al. (2012).
