Taxonomy
Liopleurodon was named by Sauvage (1873) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath J Tith-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2].

It was synonymized subjectively with Pliosaurus by Lydekker (1889).

It was assigned to Pliosauridae by Tarlo (1960), Malakhov (1999), O'Keefe (2001), Ketchum and Benson (2010), Ketchum and Benson (2011) and Hampe (2013); and to Thalassophonea by Benson and Druckenmiller (2014).
