Taxonomy
Macroplata was named by Swinton (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: J l]. Its type is Macroplata tenuiceps.

It was assigned to Plesiosauridae by White (1940); to Pliosauridae by Carroll (1988) and O'Keefe (2001); to Plesiosauria by Sepkoski (2002) and Ketchum and Smith (2010); and to Rhomaleosauridae by Benson et al. (2012).
