Maresaurus was named by Gasparini (1997) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bajo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1269]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Pliosauridae by Gasparini (1997); to Plesiosauria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rhomaleosauridae by Ketchum and Benson (2010), Benson and Druckenmiller (2014) and O'Gorman (2016).
