Megalneusaurus was named by Knight (1898) [Sepkoski's age data: J u]. Its type is Cimoliosaurus rex.
It was assigned to Plesiosauridae by Hay (1902); to Plesiosauria by Williston (1903), Hay (1930) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Pliosauridae by Knight (1898), Carroll (1988) and Wahl et al. (2007).
