Taxonomy
Piptomerus was named by Cope (1887) [Sepkoski's age data: K u]. It is not extant. Its type is Piptomerus megaloporus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Cimoliosaurus by Lydekker (1889).

It was assigned to Elasmosauridae by Hay (1902); and to Plesiosauria by Williston (1903), Hay (1930), Carroll (1988) and Sepkoski (2002).
