Taxonomy
Plesiosaurus was named by de la Beche and Conybeare (1821) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Rhae J Toar]. Its type is Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus. It is the type genus of Plesiosauroidea, Plesiosauridae.
