Uronautes was named by Cope (1876) [Sepkoski's age data: K u]. Its type is Uronautes cetiformis.

It was assigned to Elasmosauridae by Hay (1902); and to Plesiosauria by Williston (1903), Hay (1930) and Sepkoski (2002).
