Taxonomy
Cyamodus was named by von Meyer (1863) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Anis-l Tr Ladi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 940]. It is not extant. Its type is Cyamodus muensteri.

It was assigned to Cyamodontoidea by Rieppel and Hagdorn (1999); to Placodontia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cyamodontidae by Kuhn (1971), Carroll (1988), Rieppel (2000), Rieppel (2001) and Wang et al. (2019).
