Mesonacis insolens was named by Resser (1928). Its type specimen is USNM 78386, 78387, 78388, 78389 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Olenellus insolens by Riccio (1952); it was recombined as Bristolia insolens by Harrington (1956) and Lieberman (1999).
