Strix bubo was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. It is the type species of Bubo.
It was recombined as Bubo bubo by Hay (1902), Boule and De Villeneuve (1927), Hay (1930), Mlikovsky (2002), Bedetti and Pavia (2013) and Clements et al. (2017).
