Taxonomy
Ulminium mulleri was named by Page (1967). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Stanford University Paleontology Type Collection 6868 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Black Gulch, which is in a Maastrichtian marine horizon in the Panoche Formation of California.

V. M. Page 1967Specimen 4.5 cm by 8 cm composed of secondary xylem and bark. Pores round, mostly solitary, some in clusters of 3-4 or in radial multiples; tangential diameter avg 103 μ (81-127 μ.) ; radial diameter avg 93μ (46-116 μ.). Growth rings not detectable. Vessel elements avg 580 μ. in length; pits small, alternate, some in smaller vessels transitional; perforation plates simple; tyloses abundant. Parenchyma vasicentric, sparse. Fibers septate with brown contents; about 812μ. in length. Rays avg 649μ. in height (406- 1160 μ.) ; 2-4 cells wide with uniseriate margins 1-3 rows of square cells. Cells large and irregular in shape and size with brown contents; uniseriates scarce, composed of upright or square cells; pits to vessels large; occasional large, inflated cells in rays. Bark composed of alternating groups of sclerenchyma nine cells thick and bands of crushed tissue of thin-walled cells. Isolated stone cells in outer layers; only inner bark is present .
