Anatalavis was named by Olson and Parris (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Anatalavinae.

It was assigned to Graculavidae by Olson and Parris (1987); to Anatalavinae by Olson (1999); to Charadriiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Anatoidea by Clarke et al. (2005); and to Anseriformes by Mayr and Smith (2001) and Tambussi et al. (2019).
