Laornis was named by Marsh (1870) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Laornis edvardsianus. It is the type genus of Laornithidae.
It was assigned to Natatores by Marsh (1870); to Anseres by Zittel (1890); to Anatidae by Hay (1902); to Anserinae by Hay (1930); to Aramidae by Lambrecht (1933); to Laornithidae by Brodkorb (1978); to Graculavidae by Olson and Parris (1987) and Carroll (1988); and to Charadriiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
