Anomalophidae was named by Auffenberg (1959). Its type is Anomalophis.

It was corrected as Anomalophiidae by Werner and Rage (1994).

It was assigned to Booidea by Kuhn (1966); and to Colubroidea by Carroll (1988) and Werner and Rage (1994).
