Trigonia shepstonei was named by Griesbach (1871).

It was recombined as Pterotrigonia shepstonei by Dartevelle and Freneix (1957); it was recombined as Acanthotrigonia shepstonei by van Hoepen (1929), Cox (1952) and Cooper (2003).
