Taxonomy
Anoplonassa was named by Cope (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. Its type is Anoplonassa forcipata. It was considered monophyletic by Lambert (2005) and Uhen et al. (2008).
It was assigned to Sirenia by Gill (1872); to Halitheriidae by Cope (1890); to Halicoridae by Trouessart (1898); to Physeteridae by Palmer (1904); to Ziphiinae by Hay (1902), Trouessart (1904) and Hay (1930); to Hyperoodontidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Cope (1869) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Ziphiidae by True (1907), Abel (1919), Kellogg (1928), Simpson (1945), Mead (1975), Carroll (1988), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001), Lambert (2005), Uhen et al.
