Natator was named by McCulloch (1908). It is extant. Its type is Natator depressa.

It was assigned to Cheloniidae by Hirayama (1995) and Frank and Ramus (1996); and to Cheloniinae by van Dijk et al. (2014) and Rhodin et al. (2017).
