Taxonomy
Belemnoziphius was named by Huxley (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u]. It was considered monophyletic by Uhen et al. (2008).
It was synonymized subjectively with Mesoplodon by Lydekker (1887), Hay (1902) and Zittel (1925); it was synonymized subjectively with Choneziphius by Abel (1905); it was considered a nomen dubium by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); it was considered a nomen dubium by Uhen and Pyenson (2007).
It was assigned to Ziphiinae by Hay (1930); to Hyperoodontidae by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ziphiidae by Gill (1872), Kellogg (1928), Simpson (1945), Mead (1975), Carroll (1988), Lambert (2005), Uhen et al. (2008) and Berta (2017).
