Mazonopterum cooperi was named by Prokop et al. (2018). Its type specimen is BMB 018818/018819, a wing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Writhlington Geological Nature Reserve (BMB collection), which is in a Westphalian D delta plain shale in the Farrington Formation of the United Kingdom.
