Dinorthis (Plaesiomys) subquadrata occidentalis was named by Ladd (1929). Its type specimen is SUI 66504 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Plaesiomys subquadratus occidentalis by Wang (1949); it was recombined as Plaesiomys occidentalis by Wright and Stigall (2013).

Shell height large for genus; outline subquadrate, cardinal extremities rounded; costal density high; sulcus depth low, delthryium inclined; ventral interarea highly obtuse; ventral umbo extending significantly over the hinge line; dorsal umbo proximal, opening into a wide (1508) angle.
