Taxonomy
Sowerbyella alternata was named by Butts (1942). Its type specimen is USNM 97544a, a valve, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Eoplectodonta alternata by Cooper (1956); it was recombined as Eoplectodonta (Eoplectodonta) alternata by Jin and Norford (1996).
