Lomacetus was named by Muizon (1986) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Lomacetus ginsburgi.
It was assigned to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Phocoeninae by Muizon (1986), de Muizon (1988), Fordyce and de Muizon (2001) and Murakami et al. (2014); and to Phocoenidae by Benton (1993), Cozzuol (1996), McKenna and Bell (1997), Colpaert et al. (2015), Marx et al. (2016) and Berta (2017).
