Metasqualodon was named by Hall (1911) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1022]. Its type is Zeuglodon harwoodii.
It was considered a nomen dubium by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001).
It was assigned to Squalodontidae by Hall (1911), Kellogg (1928), Simpson (1945), Okazaki (1982), Okazaki (1987), Carroll (1988), Benton (1993) and McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002) and Fitzgerald (2004); and to Mysticeti by Geisler et al. (2017).
