Taxonomy
Microcetus was named by Kellogg (1923) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u]. Its type is Phoca ambigua. It was considered monophyletic by Mchedlidze (1970) and Muizon (1987).
It was considered a nomen dubium by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); it was considered a nomen dubium by Uhen and Pyenson (2007).
