Taxonomy
Chenopis sumnerensis was named by Forbes (1889).

It was synonymized subjectively with Cygnus atratus by Worthy (1998); it was recombined as Cygnus sumnerensis by Brodkorb (1964) and Rawlence et al. (2017).
