Palaeobalaena was named by Moreno (1882) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m].

It was synonymized subjectively with Balaena by Trouessart (1898); it was considered a nomen nudum by Ameghino (1894).

It was assigned to Balaenidae by Ameghino (1889) and Palmer (1904); to Cetotheriidae by Kellogg (1931); and to Cetacea by Moreno (1882) and Sepkoski (2002).
