Palaeophocaena was named by Abel (1905) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u]. It is not extant.
It was assigned to Delphinoceti by Abel (1919); to Phocaenini by Zittel (1925); to Delphinidae by Kellogg (1928); to Phocaenidae by Abel (1905), Simpson (1945), Romero-Herrera et al. (1973) and Carroll (1988); to Delphinoidea by McKenna and Bell (1997) and Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); and to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002).
