Phocageneus was named by Leidy (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Muizon (1987) and Uhen et al. (2008) and Bianucci et al. (2013).
It was synonymized subjectively with Delphinodon by Hay (1902).
It was assigned to Platanistidae by Palmer (1904); to Delphinidae by Carroll (1988); to Autoceta by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Squalodelphinidae by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001), Geisler and Sanders (2003), Whitmore and Kaltenbach (2008), Uhen et al. | M. D. Uhen et al. 2008 | Crown conical, compressed, oval in section at base, and moderately curved. It forms an acute ridge before and behind, and has an acute point. The base is conspicuously swollen internally, and contracts all around towards the neck. The anterior acute border of the crown expands in a triangular surface of the swollen base. The posterior border is embraced by an attempt to form a basal cingulum. The enamel of the crown is nearly uniformly corrugated, and the wrinkles are much interrupted. The root, broken at its point, has been about twice the length of the crown, is conical, slightly curved, and feebly gibbous (Leidy, 1869). |
